Magnetic susceptibility is a fundamental material property that determines the net behavior of a material in the presence of a magnetic field, and it is responsible for the colloquial descriptions of being magnetic or non-magnetic depending on whether or not the material will be attracted to a magnet. More specifically, a material’s magnetic behavior can be classifies as: paramagnetic, diamagnetic, or ferromagnetic. Materials with positive magnetic susceptibility are called paramagnetic, and will be weakly attracted to permanent magnets. The opposite is true of diamagnetic materials, which have negative magnetic susceptibility. Most commonly, ferromagnetic materials, like iron, are known commonly as being magnetic, and if a substance has magnetic susceptibility near zero, it is said to be non-magnetic.
