Energy is a fundamental issue of the transition. This is why energy networks are set to evolve strongly toward smart grids, just as buildings are set to evolve toward smart buildings. This chapter introduces the concept of smart buildings as nodes of smart grids. Within this, the aim is to position the users, operators and owners of buildings at the heart of an approach that involves modeling and dynamic supervision of buildings and blocks of mixed tertiary and residential buildings, integrating uses and actors, with a view to transforming them into intelligent nodes of a smart grid. This concept is a step toward the development of smart cities, raising a series of research questions (associating energy, buildings, transport, urban farms, digital technologies, participation of inhabitants, etc.) which will be discussed in this chapter.
