The code presents a variety of criteria for providing reasonable assurance of safe performance for the expected lifetime of the concrete containment vessel. Suitable performance involves both short-term properties, such as strength, as well as long term durability of the constituent materials. The later item necessarily presumes an understanding of the several degradation mechanisms that can affect reinforced and prestressed concrete containment vessels as well as their liner and anchorage systems.
