There are more than 1600 waste-to-energy (WTE) plants worldwide, processing over 200 million tons of waste per year and recovering energy for power generation and heating applications. Many of these plants operate with quite old or even outdated equipment. As these plants age, the waste disposal capacity and energy recovery are at risk, necessitating technologies to improve their performance, reduce operating and maintenance costs, and maintain high reliability. This potential for improved performance is important and, in many cases, more economical and sustainable than the construction of new WTE facilities.
