In this chapter we explore the patterns of Rs and Cs that exist in various mechanical connections. By looking beyond the hardware (constraint devices such as contact points, links, bearings, ball-and-socket joints, flexures, etc.) and examining the patterns of lines that represent the applied constraints and the resulting freedoms, we will discover a realm in which mechanical connections can be easily represented and visualized. By becoming facile with constraint diagramming techniques, the machine designer acquires a powerful tool for synthesizing and analyzing the design of a machine.
