It doesn't matter whether you're an entrepreneur managing your own company, an intrapreneur of a business team, or a member of a business team. Being able to communicate effectively is a keystone for success. I'll even expand my claim to state that effective communications is the hallmark of success no matter what your occupation or avocation. This chapter is devoted to learning how to communicate, both sending messages and receiving messages: written messages, electronic database messages, oral messages, and even some thoughts on body language messages. There are ways to communicate to be to be most efficient and we will explore those methodologies.
Unless you're a hermit living an isolated existence on a desert island and want to remain that way, you need to be able to communicate effectively to be successful in any activity you pursue. In the business world, this is absolutely fundamental. Whatever our avocation is, we all have 1 thing in common: We need to communicate. We are social beings and we believe isolation can cause mental harm. This human condition drives us, so it's not surprising that it is extremely important for business success.
Business leaders, as well as individual contributors, need to receive inputs pertaining to the status of their activities. Based on those inputs, they need to transmit instructions and requests to others. These instructions and requests become inputs to others, up and down the real or perceived organization. Entrepreneurs have the same needs for receiving and sending information as anyone else. The only difference is the speed at which communications takes place. Entrepreneurs, by the nature of what they do, require faster and more accurate communications than most business organizations. When you're in charge of everything, communications will seek a path to your desktop for all and every issue related to your venture. Learning how to deal with those communications in an effective way is a skill worth mastering.
