Now we will begin the journey of becoming a business owner rather than a team player within a company. There are lots of things about being an owner of a business that are similar to being a member of a business product team. Likewise, there are significant differences. It's important to understand what is the same and what's different because it's those differences that the engineer entrepreneur must understand and be comfortable with to make a successful transition. Being “comfortable with” sounds like a warm and fuzzy phrase; that's not my purpose. I want to make sure that the potential entrepreneur is forewarned about these differences and understands and can successfully cope with what he or she needs to learn.

I will explain the differences and point out skill sets that must be mastered to be successful in running your own business. We'll do this in a format that introduces all the basic business knowledge the entrepreneur needs in order to enjoy a positive experience with his or her company. This introduction will form the basis for greater depth examinations that appear in the latter chapters of the book.
