Beijing rural buildings energy consumption survey shows that lack of insulation is the main reason for high-energy consumption and poor indoor environment. In this paper different from city technologies and standards were adopted to improve the thermal performance of rural existing residential buildings as much as possible. Several types of thermal insulation designs of external wall, window and roof were implemented in rural existing residential buildings. Test results show that indoor temperature increases five to ten degrees. Furthermore, the coal consumption dropped by one third after the building envelope were reconstruction. Heat transfer coefficients of exterior walls and roof decreased by 60 percent and 50 percent respectively. Beside the insulation effect, simpler and cheaper energy saving technologies were also taken into account for the rural buildings energy retrofit. Through analyzing the effects of various technologies, packaged energy saving technology for reconstruction of existing buildings in Beijing rural area were proposed.
