In order to overcome the disadvantages of ground coupled heat pump (GCHP) encountered in continuous operation mode, an intermittent operation mode was put forward to improve its operation performance. A two-dimensional numerical model with freezing-thawing phase change was developed to discuss the intermittent operation characteristics of GCHP. Based on the numerical solution of the model, the variation tend of soil temperature around the ground heat exchanger (GHE) were investigated for various time ratio of operation to off.
