In order to extend the annual operation time of solar energy water heating system, a novel solar energy water heater in conjunction with air source heat pump is developed. Based on the component design and system matching, a flat-plate solar energy water heating system with 320 m2 collector areas in conjunction with 4 air source heat pump units (SEWHS-AHP) was designed and built for practical applications in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China. The SEWHS-AHP has been put into use successfully. Field tests on the SEWHS-AHP were performed under all kinds of typical climate conditions. For the SEWHS-AHP, the solar collectors can provide about 81% heat loads during the entire year. The COP (coefficient of performance) of the air source heat pump units varies within the range of 2.5∼3.3 during the coldest month, January, with a monthly average temperature 7.2°C. Compared with conventional electric water heater and gas water heater, the SEWHS-AHP is economical feasible.
