The ASME BPV Code promotes the introduction of new materials. As materials are produced to more closely fit users' requirements, new issues arise. One example is the introduction of “advanced” alloys into the B&PV Code, which represents a significant change in philosophy regarding materials' use at elevated temperatures. The inevitable acceptance of these alloys has prompted the introduction of new rules in the construction codes and new protocols in SC II that are more prescriptive than the rules and protocols adopted to govern the use of the more “traditional” materials. In view of the very significant changes in the power industry that have occurred over the last 30 years, this general trend is likely to continue.
