The technology for pressure equipment design continues to advance each and every day. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has been keeping pace with these advances over the last 100 years. Specifically, the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1 [1] has become the International benchmark standard for pressure vessel design for a multitude of industries. In response to these ever-growing industries and their unique design requirements the document has grown in scope, technology, and size. Organization, maintenance, and use of a document of such magnitude have become a real challenge, especially with a writing style and format that is not readily adaptable to change. This chapter provides commentary into what are generally thought to be the more relevant issues of ASME Section VIII, Division 1 that need attention to better serve its users and to provide recommendations to resolve these issues.
