We present an effective medium theory in order to analyze the reported antireflective properties of silicon nanowire arrays. This methodology is based on photonic band structure calculations and allows treatment of complex media consisting of particles that interact strongly. We also develop a simple Maxwell-Garnett theory (MGT) approach for studying this system. The main objective of this paper is to provide novel information associated with the optical properties of silicon nanowire arrays by studying the variation of the reflectance and absorptance as a function of the incident wave. Comparison of experimental and simulation results for silicon nanowire arrays, we demonstrate that the MGT is a useful methodology for nanowire arrays, and there is a good antireflective of silicon nanowire arrays, as our numerical scheme does.
