232 Case Study on re and Variability Design for High-Speed Train Cowcatcher

As an important component on high-speed locomotive, cowcatcher directly influences the whole train aerodynamic performance and stability. Based on reverse engineering (RE) theory, an image files based method for model reconstruction was proposed on Pro/E platform. First of all, image files, which should express the relationship of product views exactly, are imported into Pro/E and a unified coordinate system is established. And then using the image profile of components as reference, track sketch editor is used to reconstruct surface models. By the train further speed-raising, locomotive appearance needs to be changed. But because of assembly relationship, it restricts the shape of cowcatcher. So variability design is realized for cowcatcher when constructing models. The method above has been successfully applied in new products development for high-speed train, which provides an effective way for supporting reverse engineering and innovation design.
