The prestressing technique enhances the load-bearing capacity of structures greatly without increase of material consumption. However, the topology optimization of prestressed structures is seldom investigated in past. The purpose of this paper is to deal with the optimal design of prestressed structures. The method used in this paper is topology optimization. The essence of the present issue is the description of the prestress in structures. We construct the topology optimization model introducing the prestress by prescribed structural displacements. Some typical examples are performed to test the optimization model. The results indicate that the optimal prestressed structures are quite different from those of ordinary structures.
