One of the most important issues in mobile Ad-Hoc networks is reducing energy consumption; and different algorithms are developed to reduce energy consumption of the sensors and to increase the life cycle service of the networks. One of the appropriate methods of reducing energy consumption of sensors is to choose suitable cluster heads for the different groups. In this area, evolutionary methods have proved to be efficient. One of the latest evolutionary methods is the method of imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA).

The ICA, which is an algorithm based on a random population, is inspired by the notion of the socio-political evolution of mankind. In this algorithm, a number of colonial countries, together with their colonies, search for a general optimal point for solving the optimization problem. In this article, a new method is proposed for choosing appropriate cluster heads in a wireless sensor network through the use of the ICA. Results obtained by using this method, and their comparison with those of other methods, indicate the efficiency of the proposed method.
