Direct search (DS) algorithms are evolutionary algorithms utilized to solve constrained optimization problems. DS algorithms do not require any information about the gradient of the objective function at hand, while searching for an optimum solution. This study presents a new approach based on a constrained mesh adaptive direct search (MADS) algorithm to solve well-known power system Economic load dispatch (ELD) problem with valve-point effect. Two test cases taken from the literature are used to evaluate the exploring ability of MADS. The numerical results demonstrate that the utilized MADS algorithm have acceptable performance when applied to the ELD problems.
