Motion is a prominent source of temporal variations in image sequences. Most important concern to get high performance in video sequence coding (encoding/decoding) lies in an efficient reduction of temporal redundancies. This paper studies motion estimation algorithms and recent advances in the context of the latest coding standard of H.264/AVC. The latest coding standard is H.264/AVC which has been developed by Joint Video Team (JVT) of ISO/IEC's MPEG and IUT-T's VCEG (Video Coding Expert Group).
