Recent developments in traditional power system is towards making systems more smarter and to be compatible enough to incorporate new communication system and devices. Converting traditional grids to smart grids is towards the future smart and efficient power systems .The smart grid includes features like security, reliability, flexibility and compatibility with the system interface. Paper explore possibilities and aspects of smart grid in India, it also discuss the basic features concept and characteristics of smart grid. On the basis of national scenario various characteristics are proposed .All in all this work is an effort to investigate all the development related to smart grid with special reference to India. The developments of smart grid in India are multi factorial in nature but major concerns are given on to electrify rural sector of India which is yet deprive from electrification
