Primer on Engineering Standards
6 Types of standards
Standards are written differently depending on the culture of the organization developing them, the product or process they are defining, the capabilities or the organization implementing them, and numerous other factors. At one end of the range is the performance standard, at the other, the component standard. Midway between these is the prescriptive standard. While a standard does not typically include a statement of which type it is, each requirement within it typically falls fairly clearly into one of these three categories.
