The membrane stress calculated from Eq. (1.27) tends to underestimate the actual stress in a heavy wall cylinder, Figure 3.1, with an inside radius to thickness ratio of less than 10. This is due to the nonlinear stress distribution that develops across the wall of a thick cylinder when an internal pressure is applied.
