The dream of flight captivated the ancient Greeks and many other cultures worldwide. Documented evidence suggests that medieval monks attempted to fly gliders. While Leonardo da Vinci sketched gliders and helicopters in fifteenth-century Italy, the engineering skills and technologies required for manned flight would not develop until late in the nineteenth century. The landmarks in this chapter illustrate historical achievements in mechanical designs that contributed to manned flight and space exploration.
