300 series austenitic stainless steels are widely used in high pressure hydrogen systems for their outstanding resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. However, under certain conditions, their resistance to hydrogen embrittlement can be compromised. In this investigation, a Type 304 stainless steel was processed in four conditions: solution annealed, cold worked, sensitized, sensitized and then cold worked. The tensile and fracture toughness (KJC) properties of the 304 stainless steel were measured in 17.3 MPa hydrogen gas and fractographic analysis was performed to characterize the fracture mode.
