Mobile devices are rising to become more powerful and common today with many smart phones now capable to act as small mobile computers, which lead to the rise of various mobile applications. Image processing is another growing field in computing due to the general improvement in computer capability to allow more complicated mathematical computations to be done in a faster speed. This paper sets to experiment the feasibility to apply image processing algorithms on the smart phones running on Android platform for their time performance on five commonly used basic image processing algorithms, i.e. grayscale, Sobel edge detection, averaging filter, histogram equalization and thresholding. The experimental results show that the Galaxy Samsung S and HTC Desire HD which has the highest specification among the tested devices produce the fastest processing time compared to other devices. Overall, the processing of images with resolution of 460 × 308 are completed in less than 1s in Android devices with 1GHz processing capabilities except for histogram equalization that may take up to nearly 3s. This paper shows the potential to implement some basic image processing functionality on Android platform.
