Based on the approach of shape grammar, this paper is aimed to develop a computer-aided product design system. The new forms are generated by computation with rules of shape grammar; many different types of form solutions are simultaneously generated. The user further plans a set of parametric Shape-based models of forms and then develops from this set a series of useful form prototypes. In this research, kettle is the subject matter for constructing rules of 3D shape grammar. Systematic form evolution and the establishment of rules of shape grammar induce many possibilities for shape development. This system may assist and guide designers to create an innovative diversity in the phase of ideation. At the same time, the most suitable new shape styles are eventually filtered out according to preset emotional adjectives. This paper also discusses the restrictions and deficiencies of the system. The possible subsequent research topics are mentioned.
