We propose a novel, mobile agent based node authentication scheme for stationary Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this scheme we adopt a combination of three simple security techniques to address three important security requirements in WSNs - data confidentiality, data privacy, and node authentication. The proposed scheme relies on a periodically updating mobile agent resident in each sensor node. The mobile agent is responsible for generating pair-wise keys to communicate with neighboring nodes, and consists of a random number generator for determining the time to transmit each message to the neighboring nodes. We discuss how the proposed scheme improves the security of the network and analyze how it impacts the performance of the system.
