The dwelling space, rooted on the land that is related with inherent customs and culture, is considered as a container which reflects people’s daily life. Traditional Chinese residences embody the ingenious ecological design concept put forward by Chinese ancestors so learning from such concept will possess great significance to plan modern ecotype dwelling space featured with local area. The paper, starting from understanding the value of traditional Chinese residences and from perspectives of natural and social environmental elements, analyzes ecology-based construction methods for designing these residences in various areas of China in aspects of concept, site selection, space, material, microenvironment accommodation and so on. It sums up ecological construction experience of designing traditional Chinese residences and proposes strategies for planning modern ecotype living space that meet sustainable development and enjoy local characteristics.
