In this article, a practical project was studied by two building energy calculation methods in order to find out the specific aspects where some complementation could happen. The comparison between building assessment (represented by SAP2009) and building simulation tool (represented by IES VE) are discussed based on UK status, and a UK sustainable home case serves as the practical project. The related results and differences are discussed for searching factors that could benefit existing building energy evaluation methods. The result of this comparison shows that although simulation tools like IES VE has flaws in manipulation and data collection, it can simulate more details in buildings and give results closer to reality; however the SAP2009 can perform as energy calculating method, whose advantage is simulating projects that only need general energy description in relatively short time. There is also potential that the two methods could complement mutually in practice.
