There is a new trend in recent urban residence building design in which the balcony is jointed to the interior space in order to gain more space. But the balcony, as an extended part of the interior room, affects the interior thermal environment in a large scale especially in the winter time. The form of balcony, material used and the heating system are analyzed and compared as factors here to probe a possible solution to optimize the interior thermal environment in the residence buildings that feature the extended balcony in cold zone in China.
