The degree-hour/degree-day method is useful for the estimation of cooling/heating energy needs, roughly based on the weather observation data. This paper examines cooling degree-hours for 6 locations in Taiwan, namely Tai-pei, Tai-chung, Tai-nan, Kao-hsiung, Hua-lien and Tai-tung, using the long-term hourly records from the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan and the ASHRAE handbook. Fifty-year, hourly, dry bulb temperature data, obtained from the Central Weather Bureau, were used with base temperatures of 23.3 and 26.7°C to calculate monthly and yearly cooling degree-hours and these were compared with the ASHRAE handbook. The actual data and comparison of data from the two sources; Central Weather Bureau and ASHRAE, are shown.
