Biocompatible, biodegradable nanoparticles can be prepared from a variety of materials such as proteins, polysaccharides and synthetic biodegradable polymers [129]. The selection of suitable material and preparation method is based on various factors viz., type of delivery system to be developed (controlled release, targeted release or bioimaging), size of the desired nanoparticles, physicochemical properties of the drug to be encapsulated, drug release profile, surface characteristics, biodegradability, biocompatibility and expected function or use of the system. Varieties of methods have been reported for the preparation of nanosystems [117, 130].
