107 Distributed Network Measurement - A Multi-Agent Approach

Driving by the wide varieties of new access methods and services, the communication networks quickly evolve into an All-IP based infrastructure. Since data services over IP network are essentially of a “best-effort” nature, an available network management system is significant for the prospect of network operation. The foundation of these systems is network measurement. In this paper, we present a multi-agent approach for distributed network measurement to face this challenge. Each individual agent can acquire knowledge of the local network. Agents can cooperate with each other forming an overlay network for information sharing, thus reduplicative measurement jobs can be avoided when agents inquire the performance data of the same link, which greatly reduce the load adding to the networks imposed by the measurements. Moreover, the cooperative measurement schema can contribute to distinguish the bottleneck sub-link of end-to-end connection compared with traditional edge-to-edge approach. Experiment results show that the proposed system can work well and can be easily extended to serve as a platform for demonstrating network designing principles.
