The subject of this chapter is the CIM activity sometimes known as Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Chapter 13 dealt with the excellence in communications necessary for achievement of the total CIM potential. In this chapter we will examine what is meant by excellence in communications for the optimal operation of a factory. We will develop the management philosophy behind the integrated factory communications system. The chapters concerning the responsibilities of the various manufacturing engineering units have amply demonstrated the complexity of designing and operating a manufacturing system. We are now ready to explore the use of CAM to significantly improve this communications capability.
