Overlapping activities is an important tool of concurrent engineering to accelerate the product development (PD) process. However, overlapping can not only compress duration, but also increase schedule risk. This paper presents an overlapping process model taking sequential and feedback overlapping into account, and analysis their influence on duration and cost. Design structure matrix (DSM) showing different overlapping is proposed. The model of delayed time resulting from sequential and feedback overlapping and early time of project with overlapping are proposed. Sequencing optimization of DSM is developed. Example results and application are shown for an industrial process, the preliminary design of an aerospace product. The overlapping sequencing optimization model yields and reinforces several managerial insights, including: how overlapping and iteration affect a PD process, trade off between compressed duration and risk.
