The issue of quality focuses attention on the effects that the variation of characteristics produces in performance and cost of products. Currently, it is considered that the variation of characteristics is the main cause of the lack of quality, resulting in reduced performance and increasing the cost of products.
In modern industry, the specification of tolerances is no longer a background task, going on to be one of the key roles in product development.
The paper is focused on the application of Robust Design methodology in solving specific problems of tolerancing. Several software applications were developed to help the integration of Robust Design techniques into the tolerancing activity, in particular in the choice of dimensional tolerances according to the permissible loss, in the choice of production processes and machine tools in terms of loss of average quality and specification of tolerances of quality parameters on systems with multiple parameters control and various noise parameters as well as in the determination of the best nominal values for the parameters of control with the aim of reducing the variation in the quality parameter.
