The task of English writing teaching and scoring is too heavy to be undertaken by English teachers. With the help of Java, Apache and other tools, this paper intends to develop an automated English writing scoring system (AEWS) which provides a platform for students to practice English writing and to reduce the burden on English teachers. The system includes 5 function modules: registration, exam database, automated scoring, statistical function and report generation. AEWS system has the advantages of flexibility, objectivity and low cost; therefore, the system is easy to be extended and to be applied.
