The residential environment is taken as a direct carrier for the public life. The method of public participation has now been gradually regarded as an indispensable measure that adapts to urban planning practice in China. In this paper, the new and old residential areas in Wuhan are surveyed and analysed through the method of public participation to create the factors of environmental evaluation in residential areas and predict the changes that the residents need for residential environments. The optimized design and development model of residential environment that conform to the reality and the demands of the residents were established in order to enhance the operability and accuracy of planning and implementation in residential areas.
