Exemplified by optimally planning and designing new dwellings and old residential extensions in reconstruction of ancient dwelling house clusters, this essay has singled out some valuable creative ideas in helping create China's new countryside by pursuing its tradition and culture. It begins with background information on the ancient dwelling house clusters. Next, an original planning concept of broken-line design in accordance with the local geography is recommended instead of traditional axis-symmetric idea so as to better preserve local tradition and culture. Then, a new design method is suggested for the layout of landscape in a specific building lot according to local individual conditions, and also for the spatial layout of new dwellings and extensions by replacing traditional quadrangles with novel three-sided courtyards for a better open living environment. Finally, helpful suggestions are offered for reference in planning, designing and reconstructing ancient dwelling houses clusters for an enjoyable modern life.
