In this study, ductile iron was produced by the sandwich method using induction furnace installed at local commercial foundry. A comparative study of the effects of nickel varying from nil to 3.0 wt % was made. Tensile samples were machined from Y Block castings. Tensile test was performed to find out the effect of nickel on tensile strength of ductile iron having different compositions of nickel. One melt was made without nickel while three melts were made with the addition of 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt % and 3.0 wt % nickel respectively. Effect of austempering heat treatment was also studied to find out the effect of nickel on tensile strength. The samples were austenitized at 90 oC for one hour and austempered at 270 oC and 370 oC. It was found that with the increase of nickel in ductile iron, the tensile strength continued to increase up to 3.0 wt. % with and without nickel addition in both austempering temperatures. The highest tensile strength was obtained with 3.0 wt % nickel.
