The role of turbochargers is becoming increasingly important as a tool to improve engine fuel economy and reduce engine emissions. As such, compressor and turbine seals must be robustly designed as they can be a significant contributor to emissions and a cause of poor reliability. This paper presents a design guideline that explores the function of the seals, the factors that affect the performance of the seals as well as a number of design tools that can assist the design engineer in properly designing compressor and turbine seals such that they will work well with a minimum amount of development.
