The thickness of material is an important parameter between the state of plane stress and plane strain, and the fracture toughness value in two states is very different. For the facture toughness test, the minimum specimen thickness is set in many national standards. And the fracture toughness value in plane strain state is usually adopted as the material toughness, which is far from the actual material toughness curve. In actual project, mechanical member thickness is usual the middle thickness between the state of plane stress and plane strain. So the calculation results aren't in accordance with the test results. First, thickness effect on fracture toughness and plastic zone size is analyzed. Then using the relation of plastic zone size and thickness in fracture toughness test, the limited thickness of the plane stress state and plane strain state is decided. Based on the limited thickness and linear relation, the fracture toughness formula of arbitrary material thickness is put forward. And the plastic zone size of arbitrary material thickness is also presented using linear interpolations.
