This paper discusses about the use of metamaterial substrate in patch antennas and its design using IE3D software. The metamaterial substrate has a potential to reduce the circuit size of the antenna by a factor of 2 as well as maintains the amplitude ofthe return loss at the specific resonant frequency and has improved size, bandwidth, radiation directivity and return loss. Metamaterials can be constructed from a combination of two materials- the Flame Retardant 4 (FR-4) and copper metal in a symmetrical-ring structures or RT5880 and Perfect Electric Conductor in omega structures. The S-parameters from the computer simulation technology (CST) are proven the negative permittivity. Nicholson-Ross-Weir (NRW) technique is used as a conversion approach. The patch antenna using metamaterial substrate can be designed in IE3D software and the various characteristics of this antenna are studied and compared with that ofthe conventional antenna.
