Forward Error Correction (FEC) is a developed system of error control applied in data transmission. It is often applied in a kind of system that is difficult and costly to build a reverse channel for the receiver to detect and correct data error. The following pages includes the basic function and background theory of FEC and some examples of FEC codes. We also represent some research findings on the application in Internet and wireless data transmission. Furthermore, in the last few paragraphs we bring forward the information of FEC's lately development.
