The final objective in Remote Sensing activities is to extract certain desired information from the remotely sensed imagery/Signals. With major advances in the development of remote sensing devices in recent years, the need for advanced information processor techniques is quite evident. Progress on information processing must at least is able to keep up with increased data and increased demand for more accurate & detailed information from the data. Classification is one of the major tasks to be done during the image processing. We classify objects in order to make sense of our environment by reducing a multiplicity of phenomenon to a relatively small number of general classes. On a walk, for e.g. you might point to trees, tractors or swans. What you are actually doing is to identify an observed object and to allocate it to a pre existing class or ‘give it a name’.
