This paper proposes a novel dual-mode power factor corrector (PFC) which is mainly composed of two boost-type PFCs and a coupled inductor. The operating frequency of the core is double that of the switching frequency. The input current and output current can be equally shared between two modules. The circuit volume and the current ripple can be reduced. Both the power factor (PF) value and the power density are increased. The proposed PFC normally works in transition mode (TM) and enters into discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) at light load. The conversion efficiency in the entire load range can be raised. Detailed analysis and design procedures of the proposed topology are given. Simulations and experiments on a prototype with a universal line voltage, a 380-V output voltage, and a 300-W output power are shown to verify its feasibility.
