Hydrogen pick up is a growing concern in automotive industry with increasing applications of advanced high strength steels. In this study, the authors attempted to gain an understanding of diffusible hydrogen (Hdiff) pick up during annealing process of sheet steels. Industrially produced coated steels with different strength levels were studied to understand the influence of annealing temperature and resultant microstructure on diffusible hydrogen pick up. Typical automotive paint-bake (PB) cycle was also simulated on these steels to determine Hdiff content in end-user applications.
