This paper presents a fault-tolerant control logic design framework using a safety performance index. Using the presented framework, we can design a control logic achieving necessary risk reduction according to the international safety standard, IEC 61508. It is probabilistic safety management of control logics according to IEC 61508. It clarifies that safety is one of most important performances in control logic design.

This paper introduces a Microsoft Excel based event tree modeling tool called EC Tree, which was designed to enable the rapid construction of event trees of any complexity through easy-to-use templates, menu items, and shortcut keys. In contrast to many other event tree modeling tools, EC Tree does not require the purchase or installation of any specialized software, other than Microsoft Office, and is simple enough for a risk analyst to use immediately, without training. EC Tree is a generic event tree modeling tool and is thus not restricted to specific systems, domains of relevance, or scope. In this paper we discuss the functionality of EC Tree, its capabilities and details of its use.
