The safety of a certain system concerns in its characteristics relative to the lack of threats to life and health of the people as well as risks to objects under a direct or indirect contact with this system. The mentioned characteristics allow for a realization of the system's functions according to its purpose.

Railway transport, one of the branches of transport seen as a process of transferring people and/or freights, consists of its own components as a system. The basic elements of that system are: technical infrastructure and technical means of railway transport. The infrastructure is defined as the whole of devices and institutions necessary for a smooth functioning of the economy.

The technical means of transport, in this particular case, are rail vehicles, which, due to their methods of exploitation and role in the transport process, may be divided as follows:

• - propelling vehicles (locomotives, electric track systems, rail buses, subway vehicles, trams),

• - passenger wagons,

• - freight wagons.

For this reason, dealing with problems of safety in railway transport means also taking into consideration the safety of this system's components. The safety of individual components of the railway transport system is composed of many separate factors. One of the most vital ones is the question of the railway vehicles' safety.

The requirements related to the safety of rail vehicles exploited by various rail administrators all over the world do not differ in the basic understanding of safety issues. On the contrary, when it comes to research methods used for tests as well as the imposed safety conditions, differences occur especially in case of American and European railways. This article shall focus on European methods and conditions.

In order to analyze the problem of safety of a vehicle moving in certain conditions, we shall evaluate the following fundamental issues:

• - derailment,

• - track forces,

• - dynamic stability of the vehicle's movement,

• - ride quality of the vehicle,

• - structure gauging.

The evaluation points listed above are carried out both by computer simulation methods, using models of the evaluated vehicles, and experimental methods, in real exploitation conditions, using prototypes of the evaluated vehicles. The purpose of the article is to present the procedure of evaluating the safety of movement of a Feelrss freight wagon with experimental methods and the assessment of research results obtained from statistical methods.
