The Proton Therapy Facility at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) relies on a complex control and safety (interlock) system to deliver a proton beam to deep-seated tumors, using the spot-scanning technique. In connection with an upcoming upgrade of the facility, a Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) has been initiated to identify potential vulnerabilities in the technical component of the facility. This paper presents an overview of the PSA, the safety insights that have been obtained, and the corresponding recommendations.
