New technologies are the foundation for new products. The development of new products has been described in Chapters 4, 5, and 6 on the assumption that everything was developed within a product program. Many products are developed this way. However, a better approach once a corporation is established in an industry is to develop new technologies outside of any specific product program. When the new technology is sufficiently mature, it is fished out of the technology stream and brought into a program to develop a specific product. This is displayed in Figure 7.1.

This chapter describes the application of the principles of total quality development to the development of the new technologies that are the lifeblood of manufacturing companies.
